07/10/2004: "Weird Gig"

The Mister Edgars played a gig tonight that I think qualifies for an award of some sort. We were invited to play at a party in someone's back yard, and got equipment loaded/dealt with early. We were told there'd be a bass amp, etc. No bass amp when I got there, of course.

Anyhow, the guy who the party thrower said was bringing a bass amp showed up with said amp, and I aked him politely if I could use it... and he was the biggest fucking asshole about saying no. In fact, I think he qualifies as the biggest dickhead I've encountered recently. Anyhow... I used Chris Purdum's amp, which worked out well enough.

Chris and Tom Thomson and their drummer friend whose name I don't recall (but who was way cool/a good drummer) played a set before us, and were great. However, dickhead bass player and his friends all went inside and played a bunch of cover songs, yadda, yadda, making a big scene out of shutting the curtains and closing the door anytime anybody went through it. Quite a few people came outside, but dickhead and friends kept at it inside.

Regardless of that, though, we had a great set and drew positive comments from several nice people that we met. It was cool to make it through a full set of mostly original songs, etc. I dig being in this band. Life is good, even if there are a lot of assholes.

Lesson(s) learned/confirmed: 1) Regardless of how good a musician you may be, or might think you are, it's never right to be an ass to other people. Being a good human being often matters as much as being technically proficient. 2) Regardless of what you're told, ensure that you're covered by taking your own equipment.

Said Merrilee "I don't think he'd ever lent his amp to anyone." What a peculiar concept. Sharing music is like sharing language. What type of perversity was at play? I think if someone wants to play music instead of listening to someone else, that's fine...I'm into production over consumption. But there is something odd--as you point out--about the seduction of covers. As Salvadore Dali said "The first person who compared a woman to a rose was a genius. The second was an idiot."

Just for completeness, the other drummer's name was Bill Mishler, drummer for my band: the Stragglyrs (see my name in Dan's links).
And I have no idea what was up with the other dude and his amp. If we're at the same place, 'Mi amp es su amp', unless I'm already plugged into it for something. Besides, sometimes people return the favor and I get to try a better amp that actually goes to 11.

The amp loan was very appreciated. Thanks again Chris. =)
