07/14/2004: "Open Mic @ Barefoot Coffee Roasters"

Open Mic at Barefoot Coffee Roasters was pretty great tonight. I got a chance to hang out with Russell Barber, and saw a number of interesting performances. Among the most notable was a young feller named Jeff, who professed that it was his first time playing at an open mic. Jeff needs to keep it up, in a big way. I missed his first song, but the second was a really hip jazz-influenced original, and his third was a Buddy Holly cover. A young guy wearing a Clash t-shirt doing a Buddy Holly cover. Does it get better than that? The only downside to talkin' with Jeff was his comment about "nobody my age knows who The Clash is." I feel like a Dinosaur, for sure. Dinosaur Jr. Mwuahaha, like any of you know/remember who THEY are. /unintelligible curmudgeonly grumbling.

The other notable surprise was a dude named Teddy Randazzo Jr., who has quite the cool technique down... reminded me a lot of Michael Hedges, though he really has his own style/flavor. Sadly, I only caught the last one of his songs, which was phenomenal... but bought one of his CDs. The CD is good, but one needs to see the guy live to really appreciate he's got goin' on.

He mentioned that he's playing at the Kuumbwa Jazz Club in Santa Cruz (09-10-2004 @ 6:30pm). I encouraged him to go to The Jungle this week. Hopefully he'll make it (hint, hint). He's got audio samples over there on his web site... check 'em out.

Where the hell is Colin Carthen?

Teddy is an amazing player--and also has a really nice voice.

I saw Colin last week at the Espresso Garden. Okay, that's all I've got.

I didn't hear much of the singing, but thought it was good on the CD.

Despite Colin's efforts to evade me, I found a posting that says something about him playing soon with Phil Rodriguez. =)

My evil plan is to hook him up with Dave Allender. I'd like to see what happens.

I saw Teddy last night at the open mic at the Blue Rock Shoot. He was amazing. Tom Thompson told him: "Dude, you're frigging nuts!"

People tend to gawk at Teddy's amazing playing, but Erik is right, his voice is smooooth.

Here's my blog entry of his 4th of July performance, including a link to photos:
