02/23/2005: "Podcast #5"
I've made it to Podcast #5!
Today's podcast features an interview/discussion with Andrew Pejack, who talks about working at the Hotel DeAnza and riding in the elevator with Paul McCartney's Hofner bass. There are also brief comments about going to the Dawn and Drew get-together; talking with Kris from Say Yum and listening to their fun podcast; and some of my friend Autumn Thompson's 5-string banjo playing. Sadly, I forgot to put in the bumper music at the end... but c'est la vie. This one clocks in at over 17 minutes!

Note/Question: I tried encoding today's podcast at 64k vs. 128k, but man that sounded BAD, so I kept it at 128k. Can anyone shed some light on how I might be screwing this up? Thanks!

You should definitely be able to compress it to 64k. What program are you using? Hmm.. maybe I should give a listen before commenting.. I shall try that now.

Dan,
Hey - I've followed your show since the beginning. This episode was the best yet.
My thoughts:
- Love the banjo bumper music. Makes your show sound more polished and is a great way to transition between segments. Keep it and/or add more little touches like this.
- Audio quality. Much improved. Now if we can just give you that booming radio deejay sound. Just kidding, your voice sounds fine as is.
- Interview. Good stuff. I'm a big Beatles fan, so hearing the story about Paul's bass was cool. The guest was also entertaining. I found it very Spinal Tap-esque (and I mean that in the best possible way) -- where the guy you interviewed had some interesting little nuggets to talk about along with some humerous observations. Loved hearing him toss off different names like Flava Flav and Sugar Ray. Your side comments were also amusing (kinda Rob Reiner-esque, in keeping with the Spinal Tap theme).
Looking forward to your next guest. Keep on talking to the proletariat. It's great to hear about working stiffs like you and me. Who needs those puffed up celebs anyway?

Wow! 2 comments that weren't from me.
But besides that the show was good. Using Autumn's shave and a haircut to signal the end of the segment was perfect, no need to apologize for it, man.
I should get myself a hofner bass, minus the guy to guard it. They're a lot lighter than my solid body.
Keep 'em coming!

Hmm,
I assume you are recording on the device as 64 or 128? if this is the case, perhaps the device lack ability to do a quality recording due to mic/eclectronics/etc...
Possible solution?: record on device as high as possible, and use other software tools to compress to 64k.
Remember, a phone (on regulare home lines) conversation is roughly 64k without a lossy format, thus a 64k mp3 (lossy mpeg compression) would in theory produce a percieveable improvement over a std. phone line.
just my 2 cents...

I think you've got something here. Mighty good job.
Interview. Way interesting. And who woulda thunk it? Good job nailing a interesting person who probably no one else thinks is interesting.
Observations:
- I *LOVED* the Banjo music. Seriously.
- The audio quality is fine. For me.
- You say "totally" a lot. :-)
Keep up the good work!
